An analysis of the impact of obesity and SES on depression and potential biological mechanisms

About the Talk

A large amount of studies showed that obesity and social economic status are closely associated with depression. Using urban Dibao and non-Dibao to differentiate the social economic status, this research surveyed 4459 households, more than 13000 urban residents in the northwest region. It explored the influence of obesity and socioeconomic status on depression, and examined how much obesity influence depression under different SES condition.

As a stressful life events, the effect of poverty on depression has been verified by numerous studies. For the most part, obesity and depression have been compartmentalized as separate health problems of a physical and emotional nature, respectively. However, the fact that depression and obesity have shared symptoms such as sleep problems, sedentary behavior and dysregulated food intake is not a mere coincidence but appears to be related to shared pathophysiological mechanisms. In order to further seek biological mechanisms of this impact at the molecular level, this research used noninteractive literature-based discovery approach to mine the common molecules between obesity and depression existing in the body. Then it applied physiology theory to preliminarily construct the potential biological mechanisms and biological pathways.
